Stripping Operations

During operations on a drilling or production well, a series of events may require tubing, casing, or drill pipe to be operated or pulled while annular pressure is contained by blowouts; This practice is called "abstraction". Stripping is usually considered an emergency measure to maintain control of the well; However, plans for some drilling, completion, or well works may include deburring to eliminate the necessity of loading the well with liquid.

equipment

Abstraction techniques vary, and the equipment required depends on the technique used. Each abstraction tends to be unique, and requires adaptation to particular circumstances. Therefore, the basic equipment and guidelines discussed here are necessarily general in nature.

Abstraction requires surface equipment which at the same time:
-a. It is allowed to withdraw the pipe from the well or into it,
-Provides a means to contain and control annular pressure, and
-C. Allows measured volumes of fluid to be bled from the well or pumped into the well.
--bstraction requires subsurface equipment which at the same time:

a. Prevent pressure or flow from entering the tube being stripped. Such equipment must be removable or designed so that its presence does not interfere with the subsequent processes of erosion. The well site supervisor and his crew must have a thorough working knowledge of all well control principles and equipment used in the stripping process. Equipment should be thoroughly inspected and, if possible, operational before use.

For stripping operations, primary surface equipment consists of

Blowout preventers
-locking units
-jams
-pumps
-metrics

Trip tanks (or other precision drilling fluid metering equipment).

Blowout preventer

The number, type, and pressure rating of blowouts required for stripping depend on the expected or known surface pressure, the environment, and the degree of protection required. A regular drill-mounted blowout preventer stack is often suitable for low-pressure stripping if it is spaced so that tool joints or couplings can be gradually lowered or pulled across the stack, with at least one sealing element closed to contain the well pressure.
Toroidal seals are mostly used for stripping because tool joints and some couplings can be moved through the arrester without opening or closing the packing element.
Packing element wear limits the only use of this inhibitor if a high annular pressure must be contained during stripping. To reduce wear, sealing pressure should be reduced as much as possible and allow the element to expand and contract (breathe) as the tool joint passes.
Lubricating the tube with a mixture of oil and graphite or allowing a small leak of annular fluid will reduce the wear of the fill element. The backup fill element must be at the well site during any stripping operation.
Ram type arresters or combinations of ram and annular arrester are used when the pressure and/or coupling configuration could cause excessive wear if the toroidal arrester is used alone. Snap stops must be opened to allow passage of tool joints or couplings. When separating the dampers, the fluid must be pumped in and released from the space between the dampers. Pressure must be equalized across the sealing element prior to opening the seal to reduce wear and facilitate seal operation. After equalizing the pressure and opening the lower arrester, a volume of drilling fluid equal to the volume displaced during the operation of the pipe or drawn out of the well, respectively, should be drawn from or pumped into the space between the stoppers.

chokes

Throttles are required to control fluid release while maintaining the required annular pressure. Adjustable chokes that allow for quick and precise control should be used.
Parallel chokes that allow isolating and repairing one choke while the other is active are desirable for prolonged separations. Because of the heavy duty service, spare parts or chokes must be on site. .

pumps

A pump truck or skid-mounted pump is usually used when separating.
The relatively small volume of drilling fluid required to replace the capacity and displacement of each pipe mount or joint can be precisely measured and pumped at a controlled rate using this equipment.
The well fluid should not be used from under the sealant to equalize the pressure across the separating seal.

flight tank

A trip tank or other method is required for accurate measurement of blown or leaking drilling fluid from or pumped into the well with half-barrel accuracy.
The lower ram should not be used in the stripping process. This ram should be reserved as a means of closing the well in the event that other components of the blowout preventer stack fail. It should not be subjected to abrasion and stress from the stripping process.
